Dear Friend,

With level 4 lockdown upon us again, The Kai Ika Project is once again stepping up to distribute kaimoana to whanau in need. Last year we distributed over 55 tonnes of previously unwanted kaimoana. Multiple lockdowns didn't stop us then nor will it stop us now!

Lockdown makes the logistics of food distribution very difficult and we are doing our best to support Papatūānuku Kōkiri Marae doing this effectively.

With no recreational fishing, we are relying on our commercial fishing partners to help with supplying fish heads and frames and we are thankful to them for this.

The Kai Ika Project keeps operating under lockdown

The Kai Ika Project is considered an essential service and our intention is to continue distributing kaimoana from our hub at Papatūānuku Kōkiri Marae throughout the restrictions.

This isn't without complication. During these level 4 lockdowns many in our community are unable to work.

Historically we have experienced surges in demand. This is further compounded by the fact that both OBC and Westhaven are forced to close so our access to fish parts is reduced.

Thankfully, our partnerships with Moana New Zealand, Sanford and Scott Seafood now provide us with more sources of kaimoana and our objective is to maintain operations with minimal disruption.

It's times like this that we gather strength in collaboration. Working together allows us to achieve so much more with very limited resources.

Thanks to everyone who continues to support this kaupapa [project]. None of this would be possible without your commitment to share good quality kaimoana with whanau who appreciate it.

Donate to Kai ika

The Kai Ika Project is here to help those in need get through this tough period. Requests for kaimoana are once again on the rise. We're up for the challenge, but we need your help.

If you would like to help our team please consider making a donation to The Kai Ika Project.

Every contribution is appreciated and for just $50 we are able to recover and share enough kaimoana to feed 10 families.

New Zealanders, similar to previous lockdowns, are experiencing an increase in food insecurity. It's times like these when we see how important good quality food is to not only people's physical, but also mental health.

Looking for a more meaningful job? We're hiring

We are looking for someone to join our team in a full time position as the Kai Ika Operations Leading Hand. Someone motivated to help us manage this rapidly growing initiative.

You will be responsible for overseeing the day to day operations across our multiple fish filleting sites. This includes managing the roster, recruiting filleters, coordinating pickups and distribution, community engagement and general data entry.

Most importantly, we need someone prepared to lead by example. You must be willing to get your hands dirty with fish processing, kaimoana collections and community distribution.

Alongside our partners Papatūānuku Kōkiri Marae, the Outboard Boating Club of Auckland (OBC) and Westhaven Marina, we have navigated unchartered waters and created an initiative with the intent to address food insecurity, minimise waste and conserve fish populations.

This role is pivotal so if this sounds like you, click here to see the complete job ad and application form.
