2026 STREET APPEAL RAISES $12,500

hospice awareness week 2026

Across the Wairarapa, our incredible volunteers collectively raised $12,512 this year, a 12% increase on 2025. In the current economic climate, that result reflects something remarkable about our community and its collective generosity.

Thank you to all of our street collectors, coordinators, and businesses who donated manpower, goods for our sausage sizzles, or raised funds on our behalf. We could not have achieved this result without you, and you are helping us keep hospice services free for our community.

INTEGRATED PATIENT DATA MANAGEMENT IS HERE

palcare project team

The March 2026 reporting by the Wairarapa Times-Age highlighted the importance of increased coordination of specialist palliative care in the Wairarapa.

Our Chief Executive, Gretchen Saulbrey, explains why the recent launch of PalCare is important for palliative care services and the care experience our patients receive.

"PalCare is a significant development for palliative care in the Wairarapa. It strengthens collaboration across services and helps ensure people receive more connected, responsive care
when they need it most."

Thank you to Trust House for funding this project, and the Kahukura, and Hospice team members who worked collaboratively to reach this milestone.

whanau support team update

WHĀNAU SUPPORT TEAM UPDATE

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the South Wairarapa Rotary Trust for their generous donation. This support has enabled us to purchase two new motorised chairs, which are now available to lend to clients in our community. These chairs will make a meaningful difference in enabling mobility and independence for those who need them.

We also acknowledge the ongoing success of our community weaving and rongoā workshops, which continue to be held bi-monthly. These gatherings are a wonderful opportunity to connect, share knowledge, and celebrate traditional practices. Thank you to Edith Rolls, who brings her skills in weaving and rongoā and inspires people

Our companion volunteer group continues to grow, and it's great to see so many people stepping forward to support others. We are looking forward to welcoming new volunteers at our second training session of the year next week.

A special thank you goes to our incredibly skilled companions and biographers. Your dedication, compassion, and care are at the heart of everything we do, and we deeply appreciate the time and expertise you give. We continue to be amazed at the skill that you bring to each relationship. Biography service is not just about capturing memories; it is an opportunity to review life and reflect on what matters. Thanks, Jess, for helping support our biographers and managing technical issues!

retail team update

RETAIL UPDATE

Our Hospice Shops continue to go from strength to strength, thanks to the incredible support of our community. Clothing remains our biggest seller, making up almost 40% of sales across both stores, and we've also seen a significant increase in donations. A huge thank you to our amazing staff and volunteers, whose hard work keeps donations flowing from the back door to the shop floor.

In Greytown, we're looking forward to the Mid-Winter Christmas Festival, with plenty of festive new stock, twinkling lights and our fabulous pink Christmas tree ready to welcome visitors. In Masterton, the team is settling into the new store, with ongoing improvements making it an even better shopping experience.

We're also delighted to welcome new volunteers Lorraine, Katie, Peter, Elisabeth, Pat, Kath, Tony, Graeme and Ingrid to our retail whānau.

Finally, thank you to the wonderful woman (who wants to remain anonymous) who drops off fresh flowers to the Masterton front desk every week. They brighten everyone's day.

CAN YOU HELP?

If you have a few hours to spare and would like to help in our shops, we'd love to hear from you. Every volunteer plays an important role in helping raise the funds that keep Hospice Wairarapa services free for our community.

from darkness to light, wairarapa singers

THANK YOU WAIRARAPA SINGERS

Wairarapa Singers recently held the concert - From Darkness to Light - which included Requiem for the Living. It was a moving piece dedicated to the living as they navigate loss.

Wairarapa Singers kindly donated $1 from every ticket sold, and combined with a collection at the event, over $500 was raised!

Visit the Wairarapa Singers' website to view their upcoming concerts.
