Kia ora and welcome to the October panui!

September, being World Alzheimer's Month, was a busy time for the Dementia Wellington team being part of the World Alzheimer's Month campaign 'Together we can do so much', and with us hosting the Westpac 'Let's talk About Dementia' Symposium at Te Papa.

We were thrilled with the outcome of day and are very pleased to share with you some photos and feedback in this panui.

This is an exciting time to be involved in mate wareware (dementia) services. Some months back you will recall we hosted Minister Verrall to the Hutt Hub to announce the $12m funding to implement the Dementia Mate Wareware Action plan.  That work is now underway, and you can read more about it and how to get involved below.

Finally, I would like to extend a very warm welcome to new readers of this panui, I hope you enjoy getting to know us a bit better and reading about our mahi and how you can support us.  You can always check out our website to read back issues of the newsletter here or subscribe here.

2022 Symposium

After three covid-delayed attempts, the first being in 2020, the Dementia Wellington Westpac Symposium, 'Let's Talk About Dementia', was finally held at Te Papa on September 22nd. There were nine speakers, including dementia experts such as Dr Lynette Tippett who spoke about the latest research and prevention actions, and Dr Makarena Dudley who spoke about the development of tools to support kaumātua with mate wareware (translates as 'a sickness of forgetting').

Feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive including

'Thank you for a wonderful, informative, brain stimulating day'

One of the attendees was Rachel McAlpine, a New Zealand author who posted this blog which gives a feel for the day.

Here are some photos from the symposium, and to see more click here:

Dementia Wellington is signed up with Supergenerous

More than half of all Kiwi donors do not claim their charity tax rebates, leaving nearly $250 million unclaimed with the IRD each year. If you're one of these people, please read on…

Supergenerous has come up with an easy way for you to make an even bigger difference for Dementia Wellington without opening your wallet. It just takes five minutes, and you'll be set up for as long as you want!

How it works…

If you've made a donation above $5 to any registered charity, religious organisation or school in the past 4 years, sign up and Supergenerous will get straight to work, collecting all of your donation receipts, lodging the claim with IRD and processing your donation rebates on your behalf.

When you sign up, you pay nothing upfront. If Supergenerous successfully secure a donation rebate for you, they take a small fee of 10% + GST.

If Supergenerous  can't secure a donation rebate for you... you pay nothing!

Implementing the Mate Wareware Dementia Action Plan

A national Dementia Governance Ecosystem has been established to provide advice and support to funders on the implementation of the Dementia Mate Wareware Action Plan. The Ecosystem comprises the Leadership and Advisory Group and the Dementia Mate Wareware Network.

Dementia Wellington's CEO Anne Schumacher has been appointed to the Leadership and Advisory Group. Anne says, "it is a great honour and a privilege to be selected for this group, I am very much looking forward to working alongside sector leaders to actualise the Plan and I encourage anybody who has an interest in mate wareware dementia to attend the inaugural National Network meeting."

See here for more information about the Network and how to register

Fundraising Update

September was World Alzheimers Month and is also our annual appeal month. To mark the occasion, we held a mini appeal at the Thorndon and Chaffers St New World supermarkets and raised a whopping $6,452.00

This was a superb effort, and we could not have done it without the help of Sarah our volunteer organiser and our wonderful collectors who gave up an hour or two to 'shake a bucket', and a big shout out to the Rotary Clubs for their support.

Our number of regular donors continues to grow. We are grateful to the many supporters who have given $5 or $10 a month for many years and to the new people signing up. For more information about regular giving email Hannah at donations@dementiawellington.org.nz
