Kia ora Friend,

In these crazy times Kai Ika find itself busier than ever. Many Auckland whānau are needing more help than before, evident by the length of the queues waiting for pick up at the marae when kaimoana is available. Thankfully more suppliers are stepping up and we have more food to distribute than ever before.

With good weather forecast for the weekend and the re-opening of the Kai Ika filleting trailer on Saturday at Westhaven, we hope to have even more fresh fish to giveaway.

So if you are fishing in Auckland this weekend, please get down to the trailer and get your fish filleted for a good price and a good cause!

Kai Ika fish filleting is back! We're OPEN for business.

After a long COVID enforced hiatus we are excited to announce that this Saturday and Sunday 6th/7th November our filleting station at Westhaven Z Pier will be open for business (11am to 6pm).

Bring your fish down to our trailer and have them expertly processed whilst ensuring nothing will go to waste, with the heads and frames distributed to appreciative families throughout Auckland.

The Kai Ika Project will be open all summer at Westhaven's Z Pier. Services are weather dependent with updates being posted on our Facebook and Instagram pages.

Please don't forget to follow our Covid protocols:

1. Scan in with the NZ COVID Tracer app.

2. Always maintain 2m social distancing.

3. EFTPOS only (No cash).

Unfortunately we cannot collect your fish from the Z Pier wharf and you will be given further directions upon arrival.

Kaimoana distribution during COVID

With Auckland experiencing our longest ever period of restrictions of over 11 weeks, The Kai Ika Project continues to distribute kaimoana to whanau in need.

Throughout this extended period, we have recovered almost 20,000kg of fish heads and frames. This has only been possible thanks to the commitment of previous and new partners supplying us with high quality kai.

1. Service Foods and Kiwi Fish have come onboard and now supply us with fish heads and frames every week.

2. Turkish Bread and Freedom Farms have stepped up to help Kai Ika by sharing bread and other food to accompany our kaimoana.

3. Everybody Eats and Saint Alice have teamed up to provide 450 pre-made meals a week which are also being shared over lockdown.

The Papatūānuku Kōkiri Marae whānau as usual have been doing the mahi to distribute these delicious meals alongside our kaimoana. COVID remains rampant and people continue to rely on these services to get through these tough times.

Thanks to everyone who continues to support this kaupapa [project]. It's times like this that we gather strength in collaboration. Working together allows us to achieve so much more with very limited resources.

Please help support the kaupapa - donate money to Kai Ika

Every contribution is appreciated. For just $50 we are able to recover and share enough kai moana to feed 10 families. Click here to help.

Instructional Filleting Videos

While catching a fish can be rewarding, there's no better feeling than filleting your fish to perfection and sharing anything you don't want.

Our Lead Filleter Dave Ahoia is working with Victory Knives to put together a series of 'How To' videos.

We want to educate people on the art of fish filleting. Knowing the correct process can help you recover as much of the fish as possible, avoid contamination and show off to your friends.

More importantly we want you to make the most out of your new Kai Ika branded knives and understand what knives our team use for various cuts and species.

Watch the first video here.
