Kia ora Friend, Despite the stormy and cold weather that is keeping most of us on land and not out fishing, there is plenty going on in the fisheries space.
We have the Fisheries Amendment Bill before parliament that may remove the public's voice from fisheries management decisions. There is the proposed Waikato Regional Council Coastal Plan that threatens to stop fishing around many of our favourite spots off the Waikato and Coromandel coasts. The Hauraki Gulf Fisheries Plan is almost due for consultation. This would allow bottom trawling and commercial scallop dredging to continue, while reducing the areas recreational fishers can catch a feed (watch this space!). And of course, we have our regular management reviews, which have been looking at snapper, blue cod, tarakihi.
It keeps us pretty busy, but we do our best to keep you in the loop and allow for your voice to be heard. Your support is encouraging and it keeps going when it seems the forces that be are against us. So thank you! Waikato Regional Coastal Plan submissions |

Congratulations, we did it. Last Wednesday we put a call out to Waikato based people to respond to the Regional Council's draft Coastal Plan by Friday. Over 2700 of you submitted in less than 48 hours. Most of you objected to the Regional Council meddling in fisheries or marine protected areas, instead supporting the application of the Fisheries Act to restore fish numbers, and no trawling or dredging in inshore waters.
An insightful comment from Ken Barry, President of the Raglan Sport Fishing Club encapsulates the feelings of many: |

|
"Out west we have seen the benefits of the growing snapper population since bottom trawling was pushed off the coast. Those rules were effective because they were made, and are enforceable, under the Fisheries Act".

100% campaign 100% successful |
|
|
Last month Whitehaven Wines released a campaign to donate 100% of all Kōparepare wine sales through the period 20th – 26th June to LegaSea. Thanks to you, 1580 bottles of wine were sold during the fundraising promotion resulting in $33,444.84 being donated to LegaSea.
The funds will help significantly bolster our continued work in restoring abundance within our marine environment for the benefit of all New Zealanders.
Credit must go to Whitehaven Wines for the dedicated commitment they have given to raising over $110,000 for LegaSea since joining as a Partner in 2018. |

If you missed out on supporting us with their 100% offer you can still buy Kōparepare wine directly from Whitehaven as $1 from each bottle sold continues to be donated to LegaSea.
Opinion: Sustainable depletion is ruining our fisheries. |
|
|
| Former editor of NZ Fisher magazine and passionate fisher, Derrick Paull, give us his eloquent and heart felt 2 cents on the failure of fisheries management in New Zealand. "I heard the term 'Sustainable depletion' a few years ago and it sticks in my mind as the best description of what fisheries managers with the commercial lobby driving them, are serving us up every year."

Recent submissions for October management round |
|
|
LegaSea has been busy working with our fisheries team at the New Zealand Sport Fishing Council and other representative organisations to develop comprehensive responses to the latest round of Fisheries New Zealand October management proposals.
We strongly advocated for the Minister to make precautionary decisions for the future management of west coast South Island blue cod, snapper, gurnard and rig (spotted dogfish). In addition, we advocated for precautionary decisions for east coast South Island rig, and red gurnard.
We also submitted comments on the proposed deemed value penalties for kingfish, snapper and trevally. Any changes will apply from 1 October this year.
