Kia ora Friend,
As Black Friday approaches, the buzz of deals and discounts fills the air, but beneath the surface, another kind of blackness is spreading – one that threatens the very lifeblood of New Zealand's identity: our oceans. The Quota Management System (QMS), once seen as a beacon of sustainable fishing, has devolved into a mechanism prioritising corporate profit over ecological health.
Small-scale fishers and Māori are now sidelined by industrial-scale operations and a system that prioritises those with the deepest pockets.
Reform is not just necessary; it's urgent. We must shift from a profit-driven approach to one that values ecological sustainability and social equity.
This Black Friday, make the most of some great deals but also learn more about how we can work together to reform the Quota Management System and restore our coastal fisheries. You can help our fight to rebuild our inshore marine environment by donating to LegaSea or becoming a LegaSea legend.

Northland Crayfish (CRA 1) Public Consultation Open Now!
Public consultation is now open for a suite of management measures proposed by Fisheries NZ for rock lobster fished in CRA 1, east and west coast of Northland. The purpose of the public consultation is for Fisheries NZ to canvas the views of the public on a range of measures intended to better manage the impact of rock lobster fishing on urchin barren formation in the CRA 1 region.
The depletion of rock lobster in CRA 1 and the consequential proliferation of urchin barrens is just one example of where New Zealand's "world-leading" Quota Management System (QMS) has failed, with the same issue occurring down the east coast of the North Island. It's important to read through the proposal and have your say before 15 December. The NZ Sport Fishing Council and LegaSea are still developing their submission, please email if you have any questions.

Marlborough Sounds Blue Cod Consultation
The end of this week is the deadline for making submissions in response to the latest proposals to manage Marlborough Sounds blue cod. Fisheries NZ has suggested a raft of measures to better manage blue cod around the top of the South Island. Some ideas have merit. Others not. The proposal to stop recreational fishers catching blue cod over the Xmas period while commercial fishing is unconstrained is not acceptable. This is just the beginning of a long process so get stuck in now. Read the proposal and have your say before this Sunday, 1st December.

Our friends at Sistema New Zealand have given us very generous mates rates on 2,300 storage containers as an easy, clean and sustainable way to store fish after they have been caught.
It's support from partners like this that enables us to continue the work we do at Kai Ika to reduce waste and provide delicious rangatira kai to whānau and communities in need.
Sistema director Tim Burnie says supplying product is a practical way to enhance Kai Ika's focus on sustainability and waste minimisation.
"Being able to provide reusable and durable containers to fishers to use for transporting their prized catch means they won't have to resort to using single-use plastic.
"The health of our oceans, and the health of our people, is important to us, and this is one small way we can play our part in supporting both."

LegaSea supported the New Zealand Sport Fishing Council's fisheries team to submit against an application to close part of the Hawke's Bay coastline to pāua fishing. The Waimārama area has been closed to recreational and commercial pāua fishing for the past four years. Instead, we support Ahu Moana as a useful tool for addressing communal concerns, managing local fisheries, and bringing the community together to assist Ngā hapū o Waimārama in achieving their aspirations for abundant and thriving fisheries. Read our submission here.
