Kia ora Friend,
Spring has definitely sprung and the fishing is heating up. Labour Weekend saw some good weather across the country and a lot of boats were out taking advantage of the blue skies and calm waters. The Kai Ika filleting trailer has had record numbers number fish filleted and we hope to see this continue.
In the background the LegaSea team continues to work on a number of important issues that concern recreational fishers. The Hauraki Gulf Marine Park is an important area. Right now the Department of Conservation is consulting on marine protection proposals that will have a huge effect on recreational fishing and the outcome of the process will set the tone for future marine protection around the country. It's important that you have your say, so please do make a submission on this today.
We've recently had a couple of good wins (see below), a big event coming up, increased Kai Ika filleting and some Hauraki Gulf issues to get our teeth into so there's definitely a spring in our step. Have your say on the Hauraki Gulf marine protection plan |

The Department of Conservation is proposing 19 protected areas in the Hauraki Gulf. This involves creating two new marine protection tools - High Protection Areas (HPAs) and Seafloor Protection Areas (SPAs). Submissions close this Friday. |
Effective seabed protection starts by working with communities affected by these proposals, and it is clear to us that DoC proposals don't go far enough. Marine protection is pointless if large-scale damage to the marine environment continues from mobile bottom-contact activities such as destructive fishing, mining, and sand extraction. |
|
|
What's more, Fisheries New Zealand intends to consult on a separate Hauraki Gulf Fisheries Plan from November to February 2023, a plan which will still allow destructive fishing techniques such as bottom trawling and scallop dredging to continue in large areas of the Marine Park.
Marine protection is pointless if large-scale damage to the marine environment continues from mobile bottom-contact activities such as destructive fishing, mining, and sand extraction.
So that's why we're proposing a 100% Seafloor Protection Area for the entire Hauraki Gulf Marine Park, in place of the proposed marine protection areas.
We want to see more meaningful protection in the Marine Park, and we need you to have your say. Please make a submission here on our handy form. It will only take a minute and it's very important.

Biggest win for the environment in 20 years |
The Fisheries Amendment Bill has finally passed through Parliament. We can now focus on ensuring monitoring cameras on commercial fishing vessels while celebrating Minister David Parker's decision to drop controversial changes to fisheries legislation. |
|
|
At the end of September, Parker made a last-minute decision to drop the controversial pre-set decision rules from the Amendment Bill. These proposals threatened the future sustainability of our fish and would have diminished our say in fisheries.
For us, this is the biggest celebration in 20 years. The decision to drop pre-set decision rules while allowing the other proposals to pass shows a Ministerial commitment to the marine environment over biased proposals. |
|
Our voice isn't dead, thanks to a last minute intervention from the Minister. |
|
| The Fisheries Act will be updated to confirm monitoring cameras aboard commercial fishing vessels and tightening the rules to try and reduce the amount of fish dumped overboard. |
