Kia ora Friend, Sailing into May is always an elevating time for us - we get our big opportunity to talk to you face to face at the Hutchwilco New Zealand Boat Show. We've got a lot to share and discuss this year. It's been a massive year for scallops, hāpuku & bass, and community initiatives, and we have an exciting campaign underway to share.
So if you are coming along, be sure to check in to the LegaSea stand (No. 136 in Hall 1) and stop for a chat. We are hanging out for it. Finfish daily bag limit changes |
Recently, Minister Parker announced conservative decisions for recreational fishers on management of all finfish species, with rule changes coming in effect as of yesterday.
A catalyst for the finfish review was when it was realised Fisheries New Zealand were powerless to respond to huge takes of pink maomao off the Coromandel coast by recreational fishers, resulting in local conflict and anger across the country. |

Regulations have not kept pace with changing fishing patterns, and we're stoked to see reef fish like pink maomao now included in the combined daily bag limit. The Minister has decided to include all finfish species, including those with individual species limits, in the combined daily bag limit for finfish, while retaining the existing combined daily bag limit caps, and setting separate limits for baitfish.

Kai Ika Filleting Masterclass |
| As an extra treat for Boat Show attendees, our Kai Ika Project team will be giving a Fish Filleting Masterclass every day at the designated presentation hall.
Our master filleter, Dave Ahoia, has over 30 years experience and will teach you how to fillet, skin and bone, process the heads and frames, remove the wings and the most important thing, avoiding contamination from the guts. |
This workshop won't just be about filleting, we will also help you recognise different and delicious secondary cuts of a fish. We will teach you how to select, sharpen, and maintain your knives and how to use them safely. You can see them in the Fishing Hall (Hall 1) at the Hutchwilco New Zealand Boat Show at the following times.
Thursday 12th - 12:30pm Friday 13th - 1:00pm Saturday 14th - 12:30pm
Sunday 15th - 12:00pm All scallop beds must be shut |
While we exhale a sigh of relief at a chance for scallops to recover with the Minister shutting most of the Northland and Coromandel Scallop Fisheries, we are dismayed at the fact that two source scallop beds in the Hauraki Gulf remain open for scallop harvest.
We recognise the Minister may not have received the most accurate information pertaining to the importance of these scallop beds for Hauraki Gulf and Coromandel scallop populations. |
So alongside 18 organisations, including iwi, stakeholders, and communities, we have sent a letter to Minister Parker urging him to shut down the last remaining scallop beds. We cannot let scallop populations be fished out once and for all.
