MOTL Australia's 2022 Matched Giving Day: "SEE FOR THEMSELVES"
|
Per our last few newsletters, starting in 2023 we will be shifting our focus to the Young Adult and Adult programs. For the first time ever, March of the Living Australia has committed to providing very substantial subsidisation of the program for all eligible Young Adult participants who may not be able to pay full fare. This is in recognition of the financial challenges many Young Adults, who are potentially only starting out in their careers and who may have been financially impacted by the pandemic, may be facing. This decision by March of the Living Australia to actively raise and dedicate funds in order to make this unique program more accessible and affordable for the 18-35 year-old Young Adult cohort, bears in mind the unique power and impact of this program and the potential it has in shaping the views, opinions, attitudes and proactivity of our future generations and leaders.
To that end, on Wednesday 31 August we will be holding a Matched Giving Day, where all donations will be matched by our generous major donors.
Further details on how and where to donate will be provided later this month, and we invite you to follow our Socials for further updates. |

Dean Levitan announced as Leader of our 2023 Young Adult Program!
|
We are thrilled to announce the appointment of Dean Levitan as the leader for our 2023 Young Adult March of the Living program! As an alumnus of the student program (having participated in 2008), Dean is acutely aware of the great power and impact the March of the Living carries, not only through the program itself, but also in the way it affects and shapes us as people, and the way we live and lead our lives. Dean writes:
"When I went on the March of the Living Program in 2008, it completely changed my life.
The MOTL experience inspired me to found an organisation called YAGID (Youth Against Genocide in Darfur) and then to work as Stand Up's campaign manager for 5 years, helping to lead Stand Up's efforts to mobilise the Australian Jewish community toward important social policy change and subsequently to chair the board of Stand Up". You can also learn more about Dean by visiting his LinkedIn page here, and viewing his profile as Chair of Stand Up by clicking here. |

The many meanings of "Never Again" - with Ittay Flescher
Online Event - Sunday 21 August at 7:30pm AEST |
With "Never Again" being such a common phrase in contemporary Jewish discourse, we are thrilled to welcome Ittay Flescher as the guest speaker for our next online event, in which he will explore how the memory of the Shoah is used from all sides of the political spectrum to further a range of agendas that sometimes have little resemblance to the Holocaust itself. In the conversation, Ittay will also ask when it is appropriate to invoke the phrase "never again" for social and political advocacy.
|
Ittay Flescher is the Jerusalem Correspondent for Plus61J Media and the Education Director at Kids4peace Jerusalem. Before moving to Israel in 2018, he was the coordinator of Yom Hashoah at Mount Scopus Memorial College for seven years. |
Would YOU speak up for what is right? - with Liz Wiemer
Online Event - Sunday 18 September at 7:30pm AEST
|
Author Liza Wiemer found herself in the small US town of Oswego, NY, where a teacher had given an antisemitic assignment requiring students to pretend they were Nazis and advocate for the Final Solution of the Jewish Question. It hit the news and went viral. What transpired afterward led her on an incredible journey, helping to make a profound difference to help stop antisemitism in schools across the US and making an impact across the globe. For this special online event, Liza will share behind-the-scenes information and research, and connect the Holocaust to what is transpiring in society today. Join us for this interactive event that will inspire and empower you to find your voice against antisemitism and other forms of bigotry, hatred and injustice.
|
Liza Wiemer is an award-winning educator with over twenty years of teaching experience. Her second young adult novel, 'The Assignment', was published by Delacorte Press and has received numerous honours, including being named a 2021 Sydney Taylor Notable Book. To date, 'The Assignment' has also been published in Russia, Poland, Italy, Australia and Korea.
Liza received the honour of being named one of "The Top 100 People Positively Influencing Jewish Life, 2021" by the Algemeiner. A graduate of UW-Madison, Liza has two married sons and lives in Milwaukee, Wisconsin with her husband, Jim. |
Gen Y and Gen Z commitment to Holocaust Education & Memorialisation - with Eitan Neishlos
Online Event Recording
|
On Sunday 10 July, we welcomed Eitan Neishlos, Ambassador and Founder of March of the Living in the Gulf, for a riveting and inspiring discussion about his realisation and commitment – that it is up to him and his cohort, 3rd Generation survivors and other Gen Y and Gen Z young adults – to pick up the torch of memory and continue educating about the Holocaust and fighting antisemitism and other forms of prejudice, discrimination and hatred. This was a truly enlightening event, and we warmly invite you to click on the image below to view a recording of it. |
The History of YIVO and the Edward Blank YIVO Vilna Online Collections Project - with Jonathan Brent
Online Event Recording
|
For our online event on Sunday 24 July, we were honoured to welcome Jonathan Brent – historian, writer and teacher – who discussed how and why The YIVO Institute of Jewish Research (based in New York city since 1940) was established and the history of its prewar collections. YIVO remarkably is the only cultural organisation of its kind to have survived the Holocaust with its near destruction at the hands of the Nazis and in 1949 by the Russians. The talk also covered the miraculous rescue of the YIVO archives by the brave men and women of the Paper Brigade and later by the heroic acts of Lithuanian Librarian Atanas Ulpis, and concluded with the Edward Blank YIVO Vilna Online Collections Project – a 7 million dollars,
7-year international project to digitally reunite YIVO's prewar archive and make it accessible to a global public.
This was a truly moving event, and we warmly invite you to click on the image below to view a recording of it. |
