The Government is proposing changes to the way our fisheries are managed. On the surface, this looks like a much-needed opportunity to clean things up – but in reality, what's being proposed could lock in the very system that's driven some inshore fisheries to collapse.
Instead of bold reform, we're looking at a future where:
🐟 The Quota Management System is further entrenched – not replaced or overhauled.
🐟 Catch limits are set using less robust information, with fewer precautionary safeguards.
🐟 Commercial lobbying power is baked into decision-making, putting economics ahead of ecosystem recovery.
🐟 And we lose the chance to rebuild abundance for future generations.
