Cancer doesn't stop, and with your help, we won't either. |
Daffodil Day is coming up on Friday, 26th August. |
| |
|
After the cancellation of last year's street appeal, we are coming together again to make an incredible difference to the lives of those facing cancer.
Will you join us? To show how your support this Daffodil Day will have a life-changing impact, I want to share with you the inspirational story of Jo from Central Otago. |
|
|
|
Our client Jo's life was turned upside down with a stage 4 bowel cancer diagnosis. She has two young children and lives miles from the nearest town. I can't imagine how difficult it would be to face cancer in isolation. "I was really worried about the kids and what I was going to say to them. I desperately needed to talk to someone.
Thankfully my oncologist connected me up with Marie at the Cancer Society."
After intense chemotherapy and ongoing medication, Jo has gone from being fit, healthy, and outdoorsy to feeling fatigued and needing help to get dressed or being driven. Cancer has hugely impacted her sense of identity. |
|
|
Your support this Daffodil Day will enable people like Jo to receive free one-on-one supportive care to talk through the trauma, grief, and isolation cancer can cause. This year 25,000 New Zealanders like Jo are facing cancer, with an average of 71 people hearing the diagnosis "You have cancer" each day.
Thank you for standing alongside us this Daffodil Day and for reaching out with kindness and compassion to those facing cancer right now. We are so grateful for your help. Please read below to see how you can make a difference this August. |

Volunteering is an incredible way to give back to the community and support the initiatives you care about. Daffodil Day is our biggest fundraising event of the year, and we need your help!
We are looking for keen volunteers to fill these roles today: Does this sound like something you might be interested in? We'd love to have you! |
| Daffodil Day symbolises hope for all New Zealanders impacted by cancer.
Whether it's driving a client to treatment, providing advice to someone who has rung our 0800 number, or helping a family member cope with grief, the Cancer Society is there—but we can't do this without your help.
Every dollar raised in Otago and Southland will stay in our region to provide cancer care for patients and their whānau, education and awareness programmes, and life-saving cancer research. |

| Smokefree Action Plan Consultation |
Most people in New Zealand are smokefree, so Tobacco companies have fought hard for decades to keep the customers they have—and to recruit new customers including our tamariki. Since the Māori Health Affairs Select committee in 2010, the Tobacco Industry has killed more than 50,000 people with their deadly product. It's time to stop tobacco companies making profits off people's lives. The government is taking submissions now until August 24th. Make your voice heard! 👇
This single piece of legislation will have the most significant impact on reducing cancer rates than any other strategy in recent history! 👉 Get started at www.cancer.org.nz/about-us/our-advocacy-work/our-advocacy-campaigns/make-a-smokefree-2025-submission |
Smokefree Environments and Regulated Products (Smoked Tobacco) Amendment Bill - New Zealand Parliament
Bills are proposals to make a new law or to change an existing one. Only Parliament can pass a bill. Each bill goes through several stages, giving MPs and the public the chance to have their say. If this legislation is passed we will no longer have cigarettes sold at every dairy, petrol station, or supermarket in New Zealand, and cigarettes will be less addictive. |

The Sale and Supply of Alcohol (Harm Minimisation) Amendment Bill has been drawn out of the ballot at parliament, which means our politicians will be required to debate it. We all know the harm that alcohol causes including the link to at least seven cancers.
The alcohol industry advertises relentlessly through media and in places where children and young people can see it, for example near schools, in sports settings, and on social media.
Alcohol-fuelled harm needs to be a public health priority, with an emphasis on protecting children from alcohol advertising. We believe communities should have a greater say in decisions around where, when, and how alcohol can be sold.
