March of the Living Australia
stands in solidarity with Ukraine

We at March of the Living Australia, like most of you, have spent the last week watching in horror as the the situation in Ukraine continues to deteriorate.

How, in the 21st Century, a global power can betray the sovereignty of another nation and embark on as bloody and gruesome a campaign as this, threatening the stability of Europe and the world at large, is truly chilling. We've seen scenes of destruction and despair, and as the fighting continues an undercurrent of the events that preceded the Second World War and the Shoah fills us with unease.

We at March of the Living Australia wholeheartedly support the plight of Ukraine and loudly pronounce our solidarity with its people and our disdain for this horrible, uncalled for act of aggression by Russian President Vladimir Putin.  We condemn President Putin's usage of the terms "Nazi" and "genocide" in describing the current leadership and actions of Ukraine, including its Jewish President, Volodymyr Zelensky, whose own grandfather fought the Nazis in WWII, and who lost many relatives in the Holocaust.

Our thoughts are, of course, with all Ukrainians, but especially with the Ukrainian Jewish population. The Jews of Ukraine have always walked a careful tightrope, and in these uncertain times find themselves subject to renewed risk and suffering. That is why we wish to promote the work of several vital organisations whose efforts are essential in securing the safety and wellbeing of the Ukrainian Jewish community - please, if you are able to, donate generously to these organisations so that we might help keep our fellow brothers and sisters safe:

1) The American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC)

One of the oldest Jewish aid organisations dedicated to assisting Jewish communities under threat, the JDC is on the ground in Ukraine continuing to deliver urgent, lifesaving care to Jewish seniors and families who are counting on them.

2) Simon Wiesenthal Center - Ukraine Emergency Fund

The Simon Wiesenthal Center has launched a special urgent appeal in support of the people of Ukraine.  All monies donated will be sent to vetted charities and humanitarian organisations.

Not Just a Survivor: A Portrait of My Mother

with author Rochy Miller

Online Event - Sunday 20 March
at 7:30pm AEDT

March of the Living is thrilled to be hosting author Rochy Miller in conversation about her new book  - Not Just a Survivor: A Portrait of My Mother - which recounts the life & legacy of her mother, Lea Leibowitz.

Lea was a Holocaust Survivor. She embodied the Holocaust. She experienced it physically, lived it emotionally and studied it intellectually. But being a Survivor was never all of who she was. She was so much more - somebody truly special who survived and enriched people's lives not because of the Holocaust but despite it. Filled with the many stories of love, loss, hope, friendship, and food, told and retold - some by her, and some about her - Rochy's book creates a composite of the warm, intelligent and amazing person Lea was.

Originally from South Africa, Rochy emigrated to Australia over 30 years ago and now resides in Brisbane.  She is a retired medical doctor and writer, having obtained both Medical Journalism and Master of Journalism degrees in addition to her medical qualifications.

This marks the first local event in which Rochy will be talking about her book to an Australian audience, so we very much hope you will join us!

Re-examining the plight of the 'doubly cursed' - the Krankenmorde and its contemporary importance

Online Event Recording

On Thursday 17 February, March of the Living Australia was honoured to welcome Associate Professor Michael Robertson (University of Sydney) for an online event where he presented on the history of the Krankenmorde and situated it within the current historiography of the Holocaust, as well as discussing the contemporary significance of these crimes while focusing on the rights of people with disability.

Whilst containing some challenging subject-matter, this was nonetheless an informative, illuminating and moving presentation, and we warmly encourage you to click on the image below to view a recording of this event.
