Kia ora Friend,
We're into another year and I think we're all hoping it's going to be far less dramatic than 2020!
But no guarantees. With a refreshed government committed to change and a new Oceans and Fisheries Minister, now is the time to push hard for fisheries management reform and that's exactly what we'll be doing.
The Rescue Fish policy is what New Zealand needs for real change. With your support we will be working hard during 2021 to effect change. Rescue Fish is the only viable alternative on offer. Let's make it a reality.
Bring it on!
The Year That Was 2020
2020 was a big year for LegaSea. From Kai Ika to COVID to the launch of the Rescue Fish policy, there wasn't a dull moment.
We've put together a recap on the highs and lows which you can watch here: https://legasea.co.nz/2021/01/18/a-wrap-of-2020/
Paul's Fishing Systems becomes a Gold Partner
We are pleased to announce that Paul's Fishing Systems has come into LegaSea's family of partners as a Gold Sponsor. PFS has long been an innovator in fishing technology and was one of the first to develop the fishing kite. They currently sell a wide range of innovative fishing tackle and equipment including kontikis, fishing drones and longlines.
Check out their great range here.
Paul Barnes was the founder of Paul's Fishing Kites and in 2000 he developed the first ever principles for protecting and enhancing New Zealand's fish, for the benefit of all New Zealanders. Paul passed away in October last year. Here is our tribute to the man.
Thanks to everyone who has already discovered and is using our new filleting service at Z Pier, Westhaven Marina. The service was opened in October and the public response has been incredibly positive.
With demand for this kaimoana continuing to exceed supply we opened the Westhaven fish filleting service for two reasons; i) collect more kaimoana and ii) fundraise to cover increasing distribution costs. Now, 100% of the money generated is invested in ensuring this food finds its way into the bellies of those who appreciate it the most.
Thanks to Westhaven Marina we are now able to collect your fish from your boat from Z Pier. This will make it easier for marina berth holders, Orams and Pier21 users to access the filleting facility.
If you would like us to collect your fish from Z Pier then all you have to do is call 027 305 2520 and one of the team will meet you on the pier.
Weather permitting, we will be open Thursday - Sunday every week until Easter. For updates and information on the filleting trailer, follow Kai Ika on Facebook or Instagram.
Coromandel scallops rāhui success
LegaSea has been actively supporting the rāhui by Ngāti Hei to protect scallops in Opito Bay, on the eastern side of Coromandel Peninsula. Locals fear scallop numbers are dangerously low so together with Ngāti Hei they have initiated a survey to determine how many are left in Opito Bay.
Our New Zealand Sport Fishing Council fisheries team and local clubs have been supporting the survey and Dive Zone Whitianga have generously donated time and resources to support this endeavour. Results are expected in April. A joint letter from the parties involved was sent to David Parker, Minister of Oceans and Fisheries in December. There has been no response so a 2nd letter is underway. Read the first letter here.

Fisheries deadlines - Get in
February 5th is the next deadline for submissions in response to a raft of fisheries management proposals. There are changes proposed for Elephant fish 7 (South Is), Flatfish 2 (lower North Is), Yellow eyed mullet 9 (west coast North Is) and a closure to ban the take of shellfish from Cockle Bay, east Auckland. Changes to catch limits for crayfish are also being discussed.
Our New Zealand Sport Fishing Council fisheries team will be submitting responses. We encourage you to read the material from Fisheries New Zealand and submit your feedback by 5 February.
