Kia ora Friend,

Last week was a busy one for LegaSea and the NZ Sport Fishing Council: deciphering the sneakily crafted Fisheries Amendment Bill, preparing our submission and drumming up public opposition to the bill.

Our submission was sent through on Friday, accompanied by 5500 submissions from you sent through the LegaSea website. It was an amazing effort by all, especially by our Fisheries Management team who produced an outstanding submission. It's well worth a read which you can do here.

This submission and submissions dating back to 2007 have been lovingly catalogued on the New Zealand Sport Fishing Council website with brief summaries, resulting decisions and all associated documents and maps. It shows an incredible era of advocacy by the Council and an invaluable reference library that catalogues the fight by recreational fishers to stop our fisheries being overwhelmed by an industry biased ministry.

Take a look for yourself.

Fisheries Amendment Bill - What's next?

If you were one of 5,500 submitters objecting to the Fisheries Amendment Bill, we want to say a huge thank you for supporting future generations to have their say.

We want all fishers to be able to have a say. Innovation in managing our fisheries is not shutting the public out by using gazette notices to notify fishers of changes to daily bag limits.

Our next step is to keep the conversation going. We don't want important proposals like the Amendment Bill to become buried in the mud. We aim to present oral submissions to parliament later in the year, and encourage people to keep sending submissions through, as we will take them with us to parliament. So, keep spreading the word and get people to submit here.

You can read the New Zealand Sport Fishing Council submission here. New Zealand Underwater Association and New Zealand Angling and Casting Association were also signatories for this submission.

Don't forget that for this week only, 100% of proceeds from each bottle of Kōparepare purchased will be donated to LegaSea!

It certainly doesn't get much more generous than that, neither does it get much more delicious. These are top quality, award winning wines from one of New Zealand's best vineyards.

You have until Sunday 26 June to get your order, so don't delay!

East coast tarakihi

While we could be waiting months for the pending high court decision review on east coast tarakihi, public consultation for sustainability reviews of the east coast tarakihi fisheries is now open until July 12 2022.

All the proposed options include cuts to the Total Allowable Catches (TACs), Total Allowable Commercial Catches (TACCs), and the allowances for fishing related mortality, with no changes to recreational and customary allowances.

We will be submitting a response once we have properly reviewed the Ministry's proposals. The cuts must be sufficient to rebuild these severely depleted fish stocks.

Read more here, and make a submission.

October sustainability reviews

The other sustainability proposals to be implemented in October are also open for public consultation, due on July 22nd.

Feedback is being sought on decisions around multiple species such as blue cod and snapper on the west coast of the South Island, as well as others.

Check out the full species list and make a submission here:
