Hereturikōkā 2019
Kia ora Friend,
Since the rise of Matariki and the welcome of a new year we have been taking time to reflect on the past 12 months and all we have achieved together. We thought we would share some of our highlights:
- Over 5,500 schools and kura, workplaces, individuals and communities joined the Pink Shirt Day movement to take meaningful action to prevent bullying in Aotearoa.
- Our Working Well resources are empowering employers across Aotearoa to run their own wellbeing programmes and create positive workplaces.
- In May, we welcomed news of the Government's Wellbeing Budget. It's great to see investment in mental health in Aotearoa
A special thank you for your continued support helping us to create an Aotearoa where all people enjoy positive mental health and wellbeing.
Wishing you, your whānau and friends all the best in these last weeks of winter.
Nāku iti nei,
Erin & the Mental Health Foundation team
P.S. Don't forget Mental Health Awareness Week is next month! The theme is Explore your way to wellbeing. Register to hear more about how can you celebrate.
In 2017, Jehan Casinader won a Mental Health Media Grant or Pūtea Pāpāho to create a six-part panel show called The Inside Word.
Each week, Jehan interviewed three often-famous faces about hard-hitting topics such as teen pregnancy and alcoholism, leading to raw, honest and compelling stories about their mental distress experiences and diagnoses.
"Often we hear soundbites from people who have 'lived experience' of mental distress, but I wanted to create a show that allows people with those experiences to speak in more depth."
Read more about Jehan's project and why he's so passionate about speaking out for people with mental distress.
Register your interest for a 2019 Media Grant to be the first to receive this year's themes and an application pack.
A lot of New Zealanders are spending more time at work and with the rise in smart technology it's increasingly difficult to log out and shut down.
That's why we've created a range of resources to help employers offer their biggest asset – you – a safe and supportive environment through the Working Well programme.
Our Workplace Mental Wellbeing survey is your opportunity to confidentially and honestly give feedback on your workplace.
Results will be published and used for future resources to help workers across the country stay well.
Help us get a clearer picture on how work is impacting your mental health by taking the survey today.

Mental Health Awareness Week (MHAW) is back on 23 September – have you registered for the week alongside over 2,200 others?
MHAW is a reminder that we all have mental health. It's a taonga/treasure and something to look after so we can lead our best and most fulfilling lives at mahi/work, at home, with whānau and the wider community.
This MHAW we're asking you to explore your way to wellbeing by discovering the things that make you feel good and do more of them. What makes you feel good can evolve over time and it's different for everyone!
Next week our limited edition MHAW resource packs will be available for you to order. We can't spill any secrets on what is inside yet – but to gain exclusive access to the free packs, register for updates today.
The great trek for mental health
Our strong team of 30 are heading off to Peru next month for the adventure of a lifetime all in the name of mental health awareness.
This committed group will journey to the majestic ruins of Machu Picchu all while fundraising to make a difference to the lives of the 1 in 5 New Zealanders who will experience a mental health challenge each year.
Check out the amazing team members and find out why they support MHF.
Inca Trail Blazer extraordinaire Karen Hawke (above) has been training hard in preparation for the climb to Machu Picchu, as well as already raising over $12,000 for the Mental Health Foundation.
