Grace and Peace from our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ Friend
I begin this newsletter with our Vision and Mission in the ministry. It is good to maintain our focus on a regular basis, understanding where God has placed us for His work.
VISION
A community spiritually freed from the effects of imprisonment reaching all impacted by incarceration, through the Love, Hope and Faith found in Jesus Christ.
MISSION
The mission of Kairos Prison Ministry is to share the transforming love and forgiveness of Jesus Christ to impact the hearts and lives of incarcerated men, women and youth, as well as their families, to become loving and productive citizens of their communities.
"A Time to Remember" invokes a number of different thoughts and ideas. It could be that your first thought was of a past happy occasion or event. You may have had an experience that brings back a memory of the past. Watching and listening to my grandchildren, I find myself reflecting on what I was like at that age and think, "how times have changed". Or perhaps, it may have been at a funeral of a family member or close friend where we have the opportunity to remember them and celebrate their life rather than dwelling on the shadow of death. God also has a "time to remember". Reflect for a moment on Genesis 9:15-16:
15 I will remember my covenant between me and you and all living creatures of every kind. Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life. 16 Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth."
As God announces the covenant with Noah, it is notable that the rainbow is set in the sky so that God "will remember". Unchurched people may well ask, "Does God forget then?" At one level this is a reasonable question. However, there is much more to the Hebrew word that is translated to "remember".
The Hebrew word "zakar" from which we get "remember", means a lot more. It implies more than just a mental recall. It is a call to action or a change in behaviour. So, when God says "I will remember", He is going to act on it. In this case, He will act and not destroy all living things with a flood. Forgetting does not figure at all.
As you ponder this thought, apply it to Jesus' words as He institutes The Lord's Supper. Briefly, "take and eat; take and drink" is followed by "Do this in remembrance of me". If your faith tradition celebrates The Lord's Supper, how do we "remember"? What is our call to action or change in behaviour? I leave you with these thoughts and highlight our 30th Year Celebrations. We have something to remember as we celebrate and you are invited.
This year marks the 30th year of Kairos operating in Australia, so this is something to celebrate, but timely for us to remember those who have gone before us. Those who were there in the formation of Kairos in Australia. Those who were involved in the early years of programs. Some have left this earth to be with Jesus and we would like to know about those who have died. Please click here to let us know and we will update our records.
30th Year Celebrations
KPMA is organising, through the 30th Year Committee, three special events around Australia and you are invited:
- Brisbane - 20th September
- Sydney - 27th September
-
Adelaide - 25th October.
Please RSVP via the website if you can attend so we have an idea of numbers at each and for catering. Details are on the website and it is free to attend. I would like to encourage you all to bring at least one friend with you. If you are unable to attend in person, we are arranging a livestream but we still need you to register so that we can send you the information by email.
Please register directly here or go to the website for more information - kairos.org.au/30-years
There will be some early history, testimonies and a good amount of time to "catch up" with people from the past, speak to Kairos volunteers to find out more about Kairos and enjoy some afternoon tea and fellowship. It will be a great time to remember! I hope to see you there.
God Bless you all.
