In Touch

Hōngōngoi / July 2022

Kia ora ,

Last month, you received the first In-touch newsletter we’ve sent in quite some time! We’re really excited to be regularly bringing these updates about our mahi to you again.

This newsletter is a great way to share with you information about the awesome free resources you can order from our website, the mahi that our policy and advocacy team is doing, and wonderful fundraising opportunities you can get involved in.

Upcoming: Moonlight Crossing of Tongariro

Inspired Adventures runs once-in-a-lifetime adventures that support fundraising for charities. Previously, they’ve taken teams to the New York Marathon and trekked the Inca Trail, whilst supporting team members fundraising efforts for our mahi. We’re really excited to announce that next February they’ll be leading a small team on a moonlight crossing of Tongariro with us. If you are looking for a physical challenge, a life-changing experience, and are ready to raise vital funds to provide resources and tools to help people support themselves and others during uncertain times please register your interest here. We’d love for you to join us!

Did you know?

We have developed our library hub so you can be aware of the latest books, videos, articles and findings about mental health and wellbeing.

This hub has a strong focus on promoting individual and community wellbeing and inclusion.

As well as a small specialised library we have also catalogued electronic documents, videos and websites that anyone can browse. Check out the Library Info Hub and sign up for quarterly updates here.

Mindfulness Month

In a few days our very first Mindfulness Month kicks off. We've teamed up with The Kindness Institute, Pause Breathe Smile and other amazing partners for this campaign. We are asking Kiwis to join us for 31 days of mindfulness and fundraising in support of a better mental health system. To everyone taking part, mīharo (amazing)!

If you haven't had a chance to register yet - it's not too late, you have until this Sunday 31st July to register.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out to mindfulnessmonth@mentalhealth.org.nz if you have any questions or need any help.

Where your money goes:

Your donation and the money you raise through your fundraising fully funds our policy and advocacy mahi. In May, we wrote to the Minister of Health and Minister of Police recommending alternative approaches to community mental and suicidal crisis across Aotearoa to replace police responding to these situations alone.

We believe Te Whatu Ora – Health NZ and Te Aka Whai Ora - the Māori Health Authority are well placed to support the localities and create community-led responses to crises, which suit their specific needs. These responses should be community based, peer-led and co-designed by tāngata whaiora (people with lived experience) and tāngata Māori. You can find all our submission and policy positions on our website here. If you would like to read more about the Wellington Co-Response Team Evaluation you can check out the report here.

Thank you

While there are things we can do as individuals to improve our own mental health, positive mental health and wellbeing also needs to be supported by creating and promoting safe, strong and supportive communities where knowledge, hope and healthy coping strategies are built and shared. To do this we also need to address systemic threats to mental health and wellbeing such as racism, discrimination, poverty and other forms of social exclusion. Your support of our mahi helps to create an Aotearoa, where all people enjoy positive mental health and wellbeing.

Wishing you, your whānau and friends all the best in these last weeks of winter.

Nāku iti nei,

Ali & the Mental Health Foundation team
